YLabs are seeking a Communications Designer to design and scale social innovation projects to improve health and economic opportunity for disadvantaged youth. You’ll be working at the cutting edge of design for social impact with a team that combines expertise in health, economics and design. You’ll work with our design team in Oakland and be responsible for developing exceptional designs that can create change for young people in the world. While working across projects, you will help build prototypes and support our teams to scale-up successful solutions that are vibrant, user-centered and speak to young people's needs. In addition, you’ll aid in developing our organizational branding and communications tools, and create internal templates and logos.

You have:

  • Three years+ of experience in graphic design and/or interaction design

  • You are comfortable working across both print and digital media

  • Strong UI/UX skills

  • Highly proficient in the use of design software e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud (especially Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator), InVision, or similar

  • Excellent basic fundamentals of design (typography, layouts, color, etc)

  • Exceptional communication skills with colleagues, clients, and beneficiaries

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Experience working with software developers to build digital prototypes and products

  • Experience in digital publishing software

  • Understand modern web and/or mobile environments such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Android UI, and iOS UI


  • Previous experience working in health, education or employment programs

  • Analysis of quantitative data, design of data collection tools (qualitative or qualitative)

  • Basic knowledge of form/product building

  • Expertise in human-centered design / design thinking

  • Worked or lived in Sub-Saharan Africa or Asia

This role is based in Oakland and involves up to 40% international travel. All costs related to international travel and fieldwork are covered.
